Introducing……

Amelya “Milly” Payne Beckerman
IMG 0537

8lbs 3 oz. and 19.6 inches long
Born: Saturday September 22, 2012 at 17:44 EEST  (10:44 AM EST for you US peeps)
At Acibadem in Maslak, Istanbul, Turkey

I know I have taken forever to let everyone know what we named her!  But it took us until the very last hour that we were at the hospital to decide!  We have had two names picked out for months but could never both agree on one.  But somehow we came up Amelya and both agreed!  We get our funny spelling and a nickname!

I will post her birth story in the next few days.  I’m pretty worn out.  But thankfully my parents are here, Joel is off for the week, and she’s been a pretty great baby so far.  I’m still feeling very achy and sore.  We only stayed in the hospital about 26 hours after she was born.  24 hours is the standard stay for vaginal births.  We got permission to stay another night but by Sunday afternoon, I was ready to sleep in my own bed and eat my kind of comfort food!

We are so excited to have Milly as part of our family.

Still in the Oven

Back at the OB again this morning for another check up.  I will be 38 weeks on Monday.  I am just so darn uncomfortable!  You really don’t want me going into the details. LOL.
I know this doesn’t mean much most of the time but my current stats are 2-3 cm dilated 85% effaced and station 0.  I didn’t think she could drop anymore but this morning it was obvious she had.  Walking is getting pretty darn painful.  I would like to thank Acibadem for Valet parking!!!  Most of the parking spots are below the hospital.  You either have to go up a set of steep stairs in the parking lot or make a long hike to the ER entrance and then a long walk to the right elevators.  Last appointment it was raining and I really didn’t feel like walking.  So I hit up Valet.  Oh how wonderful!  It was pouring when we came out and they pulled the car under the roof area (which was really the sidewalk).  So it is raining again today and the walk down to the garage was uncomfortable enough…. so Valet I did.  Getting spoiled here. LOL.
Last night was the first time in days that I wasn’t in bed by 9:30pm.  And man am I feeling it today.  All I want to do is crawl back in bed and enjoy a nice nap to the sound of the rain.  I love rainy days…. as long as I can stay home!   But today, after my trip to the OB, Joel has taken away my driving privileges.  Truthfully, I’m not that upset.  The drive to school everyday is getting tiring and it’s pretty darn uncomfortable.  And now that she has dropped more, my stomach is basically on my thighs, which doesn’t make it much fun.  And don’t get me started on the turns, hills, and crazy drivers. LOL.  I know people keep thinking when I mentions the hills…. that I must be crazy.  Driving up a hill can’t be that bad.  Come to Istanbul and let me show you the hills.  San Francisco has nothing on Istanbul’s hills.  I actually made my front end jump the other day going up a bumpy hill.  Kind of scared the you know what our of me.
Anyways, as of this afternoon, I have a temp driver.  It’s very hard for me to relinquish any thing that I find my responsibility.  But the longer I am here and having to  not do those things, I kind of like it.  I still haven’t found a housecleaner and man do I HATE cleaning now.  I miss my house always being clean.  Not having to paint the nursery….. amazing.  Having someone else do all the repairs…. totally rocks.  I don’t think I want to be a homeowner again.  At least as long as I have a great landlord.  I know Istanbul is different then the States…. with rentals here you can do anything you want to it.  If we were going to stay here for a while, I  would totally do some structural changes.  It’s been interesting watching our Turkish neighbors alter their apartments.  I’m afraid to say that moving back to the States might be more of a culture shock than moving here! LOL.
I’m going to enjoy my last hour of alone time…. i.e. probably pass out on the couch.  Then this afternoon, I have to finish my chores because my parents will be here tomorrow morning!

Full Term!!

Today is officially 37 weeks! I'm so ready for her to make her appearance! I thought I might be sad toward the end since she is our last. But my body (and family) can't take this again and its a nice reassurance that I am DONE.

This weekend was also a little hint how crazy life will be with four kiddos once they are all in school. Both girls had birthday parties plus gymnastics and Joel has taken back the grocery shopping. So our weekend was not what I'd call remotely relaxing. I got to thinking that with 4 kids in school and at least 30 kids in each class…. thats a possible 120 birthday parties a year. OMG. I may need a job just to cover that! LOL.

I'm glad that the girls have so many friends tho. They are so settled into school. Even Nate! And its great there is such an overlap of siblings. We have quite a few families that each of their kids are friends with ours. Jocy had a party Friday night. It was nice she just went home with her and spent the night. But it was great to know how close they lived to us! With most of Jocy's classmates living near school, its an effort for a play date. Saturday morning consisted of picking her up (the hills make it fun) and then grocery shopping. Sunday was a busy day but it was fun. We took Elly to her party. They are one of the new families and I got to meet a few of the others. The number of new kids in Year 1 is HUGE! And they live close to us too!

While Elly was at her party, the rest of us went to Yenikoy for lunch. Such a lovely area. We kind of wish we had seen it before moving here. It would probably been a top choice of location. If we stay another round, we would consider moving there. IMG 0524 We took the kids to the park then had lunch at a place Joel's been wanting to go for awhile. It's supposed to be one of the best Manti Houses. The food was great. We had a lovely lunch and will definitely go back. There was a nice breeze off the Bosphorus, which helped my pregnancy hot flashes that finally have started.

After a long and leisure Turkish lunch, we realized it was time to get Elly. On the way back to the car, we walked past a Gelato place. So we stopped and got the kids (and me) Gelato. Jocy claimed it was as good as Italy. It was good but I wouldn't go that far. LOL. I opted for Limon which was more like an italian ice but was perfect for the warm day. I had to ask if they sold it by the gallon. LOL! And Yes but by the Kilo and they deliver! I may have to try that out! Why do I find this at the end of my pregnancy??

IMG 0527

After we picked up Elly, we headed home. The girls and I were schedule to get haircuts. Usually try to get it done before school starts but with camp we didn't have the time. Murat was there waiting and off we went while the boys stayed home and napped. Slightly jealous! But I need my hair done horribly! My last trip to the salon, I had them tone down the blonde but during vacation it just got lighter! I opted to just go back to my natural brown since I didn't know when I would be able to spare 3 hours. I always love being spoiled when we go. Perks of knowing the owner. :)

My parents arrive Saturday so any time after Sunday, little girl can make her arrival. I was a little stressed the nursery isn't even started, but there is no point until they leave. We still need to organize the playroom to move the couch in there. And still have to get blinds before we can have guests again. And the shopping trip to IKEA never got done, so sometime this Fall when things calm down, I can take my time and do it exactly how I want. We have just been overall more relaxed this time around. We haven't even agreed on a name. Poor kiddo.

Tomorrow is my next OB appointment. Taking my Doula with me so they can make sure we are all on the same page. I must have total amnesia because I'm not even stressing about labor and delivery one bit. Or maybe because Nate's delivery was pretty awesome. I just hope we can have a repeat! My only really big worry is that Joel will not be there for the delivery. We are such a great team and I would hate to not get to share out last one together. Praying she decides to come at night! Or the weekend! Please not rush hour! IMG 0528

Day three

Today was the third day of school, but the first day the kids rode the bus to school.  Starting at 8:15am, my house was completely quiet.  I, of course, worried if they made it safely to school.  I hate not having the kids in their Britax seats on the school bus.  I had to fight a bit to get them to use a booster with Nate.  And of course it's one I would never use in my car.  But I figure its better than nothing.

I got a cup of decaf coffee and sat down at my desk.  It had become a mess over the last week and all the kids new school stuff needed to be organized.  I was shocked how quickly it got done.  So this is what its like to have no kids at home.  Then it got me thinking, what if we weren't having another baby?  What the heck would I do with my time?   I can't work here, not easy to find stuff for crafting, I really don't want to spend my days shopping like everyone else here.  YIKES! I know its only a half day for Nate but it's awfully strange without him around.  But soon, I will distracted so I am going try to learn to enjoy some real me time.  It's been 8 years since I have had any!  LOL

Nate is really enjoy school, so I am glad we sent him.  It wasn't in our original plan, since we have to pay for it ourselves.  Yesterday, he cried as soon as he saw me.  He didn't want to leave school.  Today was better.  When I got to school, he was playing very happily with two of his classmates in the sandbox.  I stood there on the other side of the playground and watched for a bit.  I'm so  proud of how well he is doing.  With the girls, we had our playgroups and were always doing stuff.  Nate really didn't get that.  He was always tagging along to his sisters stuff.  Now he has his own friends, teacher, and classroom.  He's so excited to tell me what he did that day.  I so happy my kiddos love school.

Now we just have to get the bus sorted out and I will have all kind of free time!

36 Weeks and Back to School!

Today was the first day for the kiddos.  Well for Elly and Jocy.  Because of some paperwork issues, Nate doesn't get to start until tomorrow.  I was pretty upset about it, but in the end it worked out for the better.  We got to concentrate on the girls.  Not that Jocy didn't run off the second we got there.  And as soon as Elly found Lottie, she ignored us too.  But it was nice to catch up with everyone.  And even better, to NOT be the new people!  I think if we had Nate to worry about to, it would have been too much.  He was pretty moody this morning and did NOT want to go to school.  But we got everything taken care of and Nate will go to school tomorrow!

Today have am 36 weeks.  I have an appointment today and am having a Non-stress Test.  I really don't think I have ever had one before.  I really have no need for one other than I'm still tired.  But lets see.... three kids, two dogs, and not sleeping. That will make anyone tired! LOL.  So we will see how it goes.  We are also supposed to have our hospital tour today.  I've been so lucky to have delivered at two great hospitals.  My LDRP room at Hutzel was brand new (and there only like 8 at the time) and Liberty's Birthing Center was new and beautiful.  Achibadem-Maslak is the newest and high tech hospital in Istanbul.  So I'm hoping its comparable.  We finally found and hired a Doula yesterday.  I'm so happy we did!  Things are more different here than I had guess.  So I'm glad I have her to help us thru the process.  I had fears of having to bring our drive into the delivery room to translate!  LOL.

Week: 36
Due Date:  October 8th
Baby B: She is the size of a bowling ball (yikes) weighing about 6 lbs. and measuring about 18.5 inches from head to heels. She is packing on the lbs. at the rate of an ounce a day. She is starting to shed the peach fuzz that covered her body along with other substances that protected her skin from the amniotic fluid. She is definitely getting ready for her big debut.
Nausea:  Mostly just in the car
Swelling:  A little bit.  You can't really tell but I feel it and my rings actually fit now.
Aches and Pains:  Tons!  My hips and back are hurting.  I have round ligament pain so bad sometime, I just curl up in a ball.  And I've been getting killer muscle spasms at least one night a week.  And my shoulders are a tense mess from all the stress recently.  UGH
Cravings: Coke  and I don't drink it!
Aversions: Heat and Turks lack of Deodarant
Bump: HUGE!  It's still pretty cute since I'm all belly.  It is definitely stretched to its limit and itches!
Movement: Slowing down.  She is less sharp jabs and more squirmy.  But still likes to throw a foot just above where my belly button once was. Owww!
Looking forward to: Meeting my baby girl!
Missing the most: Sleep
Pregnancy milestone hurdle: Still haven't agreed on a name.  In fact, we went back to the drawing board.  Which still brought us back to the same two names. LOL.  Just have to wait until we meet our little girl to officially decide.  Maybe we'll just go with a Turkish name...... I kid!  But I think she will get her dual citizenship.  I'm still behind on getting everything ready.  This weekend we will pull all the carseats out and clean and do the big swap.  The paint has been bought, now just got to get the painter in.  The pack and play is out and ready.  I think we are as ready as we are going to get!

I am so done

Please excuse the rant, but I'm in such a need for a MNO with my old group, this will have to do. LOL.

Well I have officially reached my limit and had my pregnancy meltdown.  I’ve been really uncomfortable, I haven’t slept thru the night in months, and turns out a week of vacation wasn’t enough. Planning that was stressful enough, I never want to plan another one again!  My to do list just keeps getting longer.  I’m no where near feeling ready for this baby.  Her to do list is longer than the other!  I know its been building for weeks now, but today was just the last straw and I lost my shit…. to say it nicely.

Getting things done in Istanbul is much more complicated than I would have ever expected.  For a city that has been around forever, they have pretty arcadic systems.  Things get lost and no one cares, multitasking is not in the vocabulary, but I’ve been trying to remember that’s just the way things are here.  Thank God for being an American!

I’m so frustrated trying to get work done around the house, finding a new housecleaner, getting Nate register for school and add the sheer exhaustion and the hormones…. it was just a matter of time.  Today was just a really rough day.  I am hoping to have got it out of my system because things are not going to calm down anytime soon.  This weekend, Joel has to work (for the first time), we have uniform shopping, a meeting with a doula, plus I’m still making up laundry from vacation.  Then finish all the baby stuff I can.  And then school starts next week, we still have a dumb piece of paper to submit for Nate to be official registered, and make sure the bus is set up.  Then Jocy informs me that gymnastics starts the first day of school.  Plus my OB had to reschedule my appointment to the most inconvenient time but no other option.  UGH!  I am already stressing.  Just so much going on over the next few months and none of it is drama free!  I will be so counting down the days until Christmas in Barcelona!

But the best part of all the craziness, is our newest addition.  Even though she is making me miserable, I can’t wait to meet her.  But until then, I am going to warn the world, do NOT cross me!  This crazy pregnant lady may go postal on you! Smile

More adventures with the Sister in law

With our whirlwind of craziness, I haven't finished about my wonderful visit with my SIL and friends.

That Wednesday, I planned a trip to the Grand Bazaar, Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Whenever anyone comes for a visit and wants to go to the Grand Bazaar, we have to take my friend Ilknur. She loves to bargain!!! Plus if you go with us, you are less likely to get the tourist price. So Joel was wonderful and drove himself to work that day so we could have Murat drive. Parking is such a pain in that area. We have been lucky a few times, but never something you want to risk during tourist season. And Joel was truly wonderful for not complaining, as the bridge had been under construction all summer and his easy summer drive turned into a nightmare. I think that night it took him 4 hours to get home.

Anyways, we left a bit after 9 that morning for the Bazaar. It's a good time to miss all the traffic. Plus since August is the hottest time of the year, the much cooler weather would help. I was actually expecting a cool day in the Bazaar but I was truly disappointed. The humidity really made it too warm. Didn't matter how deep into the Bazaar we got, it was still too hot for me. I had a couple things I wanted to get but I was mostly there to just hang out. We didn't get in too far before Russ and Annie found a place to shop! Russ was really great fun the whole time he was here! I let everyone look and I just kind of wandered. I was hot and being so pregnant, I was uncomfortable. I got to talking to the store manager at the next shop when he offered me a seat and something to drink. We got to talking and turns out he didn't live too far from us and was attending the University down the street. We had a very nice chat and he worked with me on some Turkish. Very nice guy, even Russ ended up buying a water pipe from him. For the most part, these are the type of people you meet in the Bazaar. Plus they seem to relax when they find out you are living in Istanbul. Always very curious as to what brought you.

Two of my favorite things I hear in the Grand Bazaar are: How can I help you spend your money and Where do you live? The first makes me laugh every time. I always respond, I never need help! But the second one lets me taunt some of the more rude store keeps. I tell them I live in Istanbul which causes this very confused look on their face and to become speechless. Then they recover and say no you're an American. Well yes, but you asked where I live and I live in Istinye. By this point, they give up and walk away. Makes me giggle every time!

We spent about 4 hours walking around shopping, mostly my fault, before we gave up and headed to lunch. I couldn't find what I was looking for at the Bazaar and then had a shopping list for in and around the Spice Bazaar. Elly LOVES this cheese that looks like string cheese. For some reason, this one shop has the best we have found in the city. Then I spotted the olives. After trying all of them, I found the most amazing ones and bought 2 kilos! I must tease Justin at this point! We went to one of my fav stores in the Spice Bazaar. They are always spoiling the kids, so I've become loyal. I wanted some tea and dried cranberries (hard to find here) too. Justin had bought a Turkish tea set, so he wanted some tea. I had gotten them Apple tea while shopping and he decided that is what he wanted. I let them shop as I sat. During the walk from the Grand to the Spice Bazaar, I was having some rough contractions. Had to sit once, so I was placed upon my stool at our arrival. Justin finishes his order and then comes over to me and says…. I forgot about the metric system and then holds up a KILO of apple tea! LOL I laughed but only because I have been there! I probably won't have to pick up any tea for him until we leave!

Murat had found this great little restaurant by the Blue Mosque. Ilknur and I had planned to sit at a cafe while the others visited Hagia and the Blue Mosque. Beautiful places but only so many times can you see it. We had a very wonderful lunch. Probably some of the best Piliç şiş I have ever had. That is grilled chicken on a skewer. After lunch, the gang headed off to be tourists and the rest of us headed next door to a cafe. Murat had met the owner while he was outside for a smoke. The owner was from San Francisco! Very nice guy and great drinks! It was a very warm day but a good breeze so we sat out front. I ordered a Banana Split Smoothie. Oh it was heaven! Finally the crew returned and we jumped in the car to fight rush hour.

Only part of the drive was rough and we got home at a decent time. Bea had watched the kiddos for us that day. After the trip to Topkapi, I was not attempting to wrestle all three thru the Grand Bazaar. She had fed the kids already, so we just had to feed us. Joel was still stuck on the Asian side as this time and said not to worry about him. We decided the olives and cheese would be a good dinner. Our 4 guest decided a trip to Carrefour was needed for some more stuff and they would stop and pick up more bread. And off they went, walking to the grocery! I haven't even done that! LOL. They were really enjoying walking around. But as a normal tourist, you probably wouldn't get the chance to see how every day people live. The funniest part of the whole thing, not only did they run into Joel (getting Burger King), they also ran into Murat and his family, who drove them back! Pretty funny running into the only people you know in the city!

That night we ate and had a marathon game of Mario Brothers. Good times!

Thursday, Russ, Annie, and Justin were off to visit the Asian side of Istanbul. Rachelle and I were going to spend some time together and do some birthday shopping for Jocy and get mani pedis. Ilknur came along, so we had a lovely girls days!

Joel had taken Friday off and we decided that you can't come to Istanbul without a trip to the Black Sea. We headed up to Kilyos for a day at the beach. It was a perfect day besides the water being a bit too rough. Great way to spend the last full day with our guest. After that, we decided to take them to our favorite hole in the wall restaurant by the water. We made the walk down since parking on a Friday night would be crazy especially with the Ramadan carnival going on across the street. It's kind of a rough walk… surprisingly not pedestrian friendly. But I always enjoying walking thru "downtown" Istinye. The owners of the restaurant know Joel well. They have a lentil soup that I love and craved quite a bit during my pregnancy. And its on the way home, so nights I didn't want to cook, he could pick up a tasty and inexpensive dinner for us. Russ had been very adventurous trying all kind of Turkish foods during his trip. And we knew he would love this place. It really is just a shack on the side of the road. They love the kids and were happy to see us. We ordered a TON of food. One of the owners was highly impressed with Russ and all that he tried! Traditionally, it is the head of the family that always pays the bill. It took me a while to discover this because I wondered why everyone was so weirded out that I was paying the bill. It became a habit after the last time Joel lost his debit card and I wouldn't get him a new one. :) And guest never pay here. Even if everyone is a local, whoever invited everyone is who pays. Definitely a lot different than the states. Forget about asking to split the bill!! LOL. So when Russ snuck over to pick up the bill, the owner leaned over to Joel to ask if it was OK. Made me giggle. It was sweet that Russ wanted to pick up the tab, so Joel wasn't going to argue. American vs. Turkish culture…its impressive! The only downside to this whole evening…. the walk home. Our street is a pretty steep hill. My car never leaves 2nd gear trying to get up it. So walking it was killer. Well to me at least… and Russ. Luckily, there are plenty resting stops on the way up. LOL. I will NOT be making that walk again until at least 6 weeks postpartum!

Since it was the last night they were going to be in Istanbul, Annie and Russ decided to venture out into the city. Murat had told them how beautiful it is at night. I was highly impressed they managed the public transportation system and got back about 1:30am. The next day they said they even found a water pipe bar! I couldn't imagine my parents being so adventurous!

Saturday was Jocy's 8th birthday party. She was very excited to have Aunt Rachelle there. Aunt Rachelle parties are always fun. Especially, when we make the cake! LOL. Everyone helped out, it was a great time! Even had a great water balloon fight. Sadly, they had to leave for the airport before 4pm.

I am really lucky to have an awesome Sister in law that I have a blast with. It's been since Christmas since I have seen her and it will be Christmas before I see her again. But we do talk most days. It was nice to finally meet the boyfriend. Justin was great fun and the kids loved him. And Annie and Russ were just wonderful guests. They are welcome back anytime…. just not in August again! Too hot!

So that was our fun time! It went way too fast. But I'm really looking forward to Barcelona with Rachelle and Justin in a few short months!!

Summer Vacation

Our two weeks of vacation has sadly come to an end.  It’s been a long time since I have gotten to spend that much time with Joel.  With his crazy work schedule, we really needed some time reconnect.  Even as a whole family.

The first week was just hanging around home.  We had some great family time planning the Wii.  The first few days of vacation where the end of fasting for Ramadan, so keeping a low profile was the plan.  Plus we got so much checked off our list!  Way too much shopping!  Finally got to check out the new Gymboree at Trump Towers Mall.  The Mall itself is ok… but I was so happy to see clothes I knew!  It was the first time I’ve ever taken Joel shopping at Gymboree.  I rarely ever buy anything there full price unless I absolute LOVE it.  And we lucked out and they were having a 70% off sale!

We also made sure to hit up the places we like to eat.  We never get to go out to eat during the week, and it is so less stressful.  Fighting the crowds with three kids and me preggers is never a relaxing event.

Sunday we headed to Canakkale for a week on the Aegean.  The girls were going to Gymnastics camp at one of the local Universities from Tuesday to Tuesday.  So we wanted to cram a few days of fun with them.  Since we are getting lazy here…. we borrowed a Transit and took our driver with us. LOL.  And his family too.  It was our thanks for a good year.  And they are good fun.  Of course we couldn’t get out of the city without some drama, but we finally arrived around dinner time.  It took a bit longer than I had expected, but I enjoyed my first car ferry ride!  I didn’t have any motion sickness at all!

We had a lovely week!  The girls are doing great at camp and I got to relax a bit.  I will post pics and go into detail later.  All I have to say is that vacation with one kid is way too easy.

Now this week will be spent getting last minute things done before school starts.  The girls get back tomorrow night and I’m sure will be exhausted.  I am so proud of Elly for being the youngest and hanging in there for a hard week.  I’m excited to hear all about it.

Can’t believe summer is almost over!
