The Blue House of Crazy

Adventures of an American Expat Family

End of an Era

On April 13, 2015, the world lost a beautiful, kind and classy woman.  My Grandma Hoffman passed away.  She truly was a classy woman.  It seems like they are few and far between these days.  Grandma always got up and put her face on, her jewelry and dressed well.  She rarely yelled but when she did, it was still very lady like.  Her house was always perfectly cleaned, she cooked three meals a day and even held a job for most of her life.  She was outgoing, kind, funny and ready to help.

How did she do it all?  I would love to be half the lady she was.  And she had 5 kids!

This has to be the hardest loss for me yet overseas.  At least with my father in law's passing, the company covered our expenses to go home for the funeral.  But Grandparents aren't included.  I was quite lucky to have gotten to see her during out unexpected trip back this passed fall.  Milly got to meet her namesake for the first time.  Heck, I think Nate met Grandma for the first time.  We had a lovely day together with our family.  I always loved going to Grandma and Grandpa's house in Doe Valley.  And once they moved to Florida, it got a little harder to visit.  I did make it down in college with my friend Kristy. And a few other times.  They really were so much fun!

My parents and brother were here in Valencia for their first (and last) visit when we got the news.  I felt so terrible for my dad.  He just lost his last parent.  My dad isn't a crier.  He went into busy mode.  But I know it was very hard on him.  But she has been back in Louisville a few months, since she was released from rehab from breaking her hip.

I'm still struggling with the loss but I know she is happily in heaven with my Grandpa.  I am grateful that I go so many years with amazing people!
